Feeding Therapy

Feeding therapy is a specialized area of speech pathology or occupational therapy that helps individuals who have difficulties with eating. It can improve chewing and swallowing abilities, address picky eating habits and other conditions like sensory processing issues. At Redwood, our therapists look at the whole picture impacting feeding including: oral motor skills, sensory modulation, sensory discrimination, birth history, sleep habits, trauma, etc. Our therapists are trained in the following feeding approaches:

  • Following typical development as our “road map” to help teach the skills for feeding and eating

  • Understanding and recognizing that each child’s individual neurodivergence and family circumstances will guide intervention

  • Embodying the idea that learning to eat can be fun and enjoyable

  • Empowering children to change new and/or challenging foods to make the food work better for their bodies

Evaluation and treatment for children, adolescents and adults with the following difficulties:

  • Chewing and Swallowing

  • Picky and Problem eating

  • Sensory Processing issues regarding foods

  • Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD)

  • Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
